Endobronchial High Dose Rate Brachytherapy for Control of NSCLC
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Long term survival of NSC lung cancer relies on successful surgical resection. However, approximately 75% of primary lung carcinoma cases present with surgically incurable disease and are treated with alternative approaches such as radiation and/or chemotherapy. The survival results are however poor. About 50-60% of patients treated with external radiation therapy will experience local recurrence [9]. Most studies have recommended a dose more than 60 Gy to achieve long-term local control [3], which however will jeopardize the tolerance of the normal surrounding tissues. The rationale of endobronchial brachytherapy stemmed from the fact that it offers a mean to deliver additional radiation to a local disease process even after previous full dose external beam therapy with sparing of the surrounding normal tissues from the early and late effect of X-ray therapy [5]. The main objective of the present study was to review and analyze, retrospectively, the effectiveness of HDR brachytherapy in the management of primary lung cancer with a curative intent as well as palliation of recurrent or metastatic endobronchial malignances with respiratory distress.

Long-term results of curative intraluminal high dose rate brachytherapy for endobronchial carcinoma
BACKGROUND The treatment strategy of central lung tumors is not established. Intraluminal brachytherapy (ILBT) is widely used for palliative treatment of endobronchial tumors, however, it is also a promising option for curative treatment with limited data. This study evaluates the results after ILBT for endobronchial carcinoma. METHOD Sixteen-endobronchial carcinoma of 13 patients treated wit...

BACKGROUND To retrospectively evaluate the outcome of patients with inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer treated with primary external beam radiotherapy combined with high-dose-rate endobronchial brachytherapy boost. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1988 and 2005, 35 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (stage I-III) ineligible for surgical resection and/or chemotherapy, were primarily treat...
متن کاملModification of Source Strength in Low-Dose-Rate Lung Brachytherapy with 125I and 103Pd seeds
Background:Â A new treatment approach for most patients who have undergone early stage non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), is wedge resection plus permanent implant brachytherapy. However, the specification of dose to medium at low energies especially in heterogeneous lung is unclear yet. Objective:Â The present study aims to modify source strength for different configurations of 125I and 103...
متن کاملHigh dose-rate brachytherapy as a treatment option in primary tracheal tumors.
PURPOSE To present experience with high dose-rate endobronchial brachytherapy in the treatment of primary tracheal tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS Four patients with nonresected primary tracheal tumors are presented: 2 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea, 1 of recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 1 with recurrent plasmacytoma. All received brachytherapy, alone or as a boost for pr...
متن کاملSecond Line Palliative Endobronchial Radiotherapy with HDR Ir 192 in Recurrent Lung Carcinoma
PURPOSE To observe the efficiency of reirradiation with high dose rate intraluminal brachytherapy in symptomatic palliation of recurrent endobronchial tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 1994 and June 1998, 21 patients diagnosed with recurrent endobronchial tumors following external beam radiotherapy were treated palliatively with high dose rate intraluminal irradiation at Hacettepe...
